Introduction     The three-receptor theory from 1856 by Thomas Young, is still the basis of the current paradigma and taught in colleges. It finds its origin in physics and physiology but is not able to account for several, everyday sensorial / experiential phenomena like long duration successive Colour Contrast, Colour Assimilation and Colour Constancy (common experiences but often set aside as they do not fit the paradigma). Next to that, understanding how colour can affect people enables designers to predict the response of product users to coloured shapes. This is the realm of Colour Aesthetics Research that took off from ± 1900, but as Ball summarizes in 1965 from authors conclusions over these 65 years of literature: "There is as yet no extensive scientific knowledge about how colours affect people, but some start have been made ...". And although the techniques for manipulating colours for lighting and imaging have advanced vastly in the last forty years, even up until now no comprehensive Colour Aesthetics Theory exists although for particular aesthetic questions often answers, at least inspirational to the design of specific research, can be found.
For our Industrial Design Engineers we lay weight on sensorial / experiential theories and explanations and add exercises to apprehend subtle manipulation of several aspects of Colours. Colours that can be applied to realistic product simulations in real contexts to which the users behavioural response can be discussed and tested.

The Colour Show consists of five elements, the first three can be found in this site:

Text                 In this website you find a sound text by prof.dr. G.J.F. Smets and dr.J.P. Claessen that briefly and scholarly describes colour perception from an experiential point of view, for which I thank them. Inserted in the text are some B&W graphs and tables.

Pictures           Coloured pictures that illustrate the text can be judged onscreen.
- Do not print pictures but read printed text while viewing pictures onscreen.

Excercises       Apprehend subtle Colour manipulation, judgement and choice by executing five meaningful sensorial and hands-on excercises.
Text will be available as hand out in the workshop (and in due time on this site).

Demos             - BBC -Horizon- "Colourful Notions". Colour constancy, Simultaneous

and Successive contrasts and some other demos.
- A replication of dr. Edwin Land's famous slide demo. Temporarily not available

Shop                Experiencing sensorial aspects of hands-on Colour experiments.
Colour Mixing, Contrasteffects, Metamerism, Colour Dimensions.
- A. H. Munsell's Colour notation system,
- J. Albers' "Interaction of Color",
- RGB Colour Mixer, Coloured Shadows
- Hand-held Cardboard Land Demo to put together / as takeaway
