Teaching

On this page you can find an overview of the courses and student projects I am or was involved in.

Elective RichCollections

In this elective, students will design for children with autism. First, they will learn about these children through own experience. In teams of about 3 students, they will visit children at school. Next, they will make your own research plan, collect data, formulate a design vision, and translate insights to ideas and early prototypes. In the end, students will test their prototype with the children, and/or teachers and parents.

The organisation of this course consists of Pieter Jan Stappers, Froukje Sleeswijk Visser and me.

Period: December 2009 - April 2010

Courses

Master course 'Context and Conceptualisation'

This is a course for students of the master 'Design for Interaction' and of 'Strategic Product Design'. The first weeks cover contextmapping techniques. By means of lecturing and mentoring during practicals I help students learning theory and practical aspects of contextmapping techniques. The contextmapping team of this year consists this year of Pieter Jan Stappers, Corrie van der Lelie, Carolien Postma and me.

Period: September 2009 - January 2010

Master course 'Exploring Interactions'

This is a course for students of the master 'Design for Interaction'. In this course students can approach me for advise concerning contextmapping techniques.

Period: September 2009 - January 2010

Courses in the past

Master Course 'Interactive Technology Design'

The course Interactive Technology Design, aims to equip graduate students with design theory while gaining practical experience in the development of products which utilize potentials of embedded technology in products in terms of enriching the user experience.

Within this course I coached 3 teams working on 'interactive products for children with autism'. Half of each team, did the elective 'RichCollections' as preparation.

Period: February - June 2009

Current (graduation) projects

A jobcoach for autistic youth

Joost van Hoevelaak will design a jobcoach for autistic youth. He graduates at Waag Society for het Leo Kannerhuis.

Period: September 2009 ->

Completed (Graduation) projects

Below I list the (graduation) projects I supervise(d). If you want to graduate or do a project on a 'difficult-to-reach' user group, you are welcome to contact me.

Snapje: An app for autistic children to learn emotions

Pascalle Karthaus designed an iphone application called Snapje, that can help children with autism learn emotions. Basis of this application is the PrEmo-tool of Pieter Desmet. Together with a parent, a child can discuss the emotions in a recent situation (they were part of) with the fun rewards of the PrEmo-cartoons. Visit the Snapje website for more information!

Period: April 2009 - December 2009

BelevingenBos for children with physical disabilities

Evita Ooms designed a nature experience for children with physical disabilities for Stichting Bio Vakantieoord. Her BelevingenBos is about playing in and with objects from the forest.

Period: June 2009 - January 2010

ITD Project: Jumpillo for autistic children

Within the master course Interactive Technology Design, Gregor, Deger, Nicky, Elsemieke, Marijke and Jolijn designed Jumpillo. Jumpillo aims to give children with autism some piece of mind by means of exercise: jumping! Jumping in four different areas gives different sound effects, and the more you jump, the more lights you collect. The children loved it!

ITD Project: Activitree for autistic children

Within the master course Interactive Technology Design, Winnie, Claire, Lily, Yiu, Hanneke and Claire designed the Activitree. The tree aims to support children with autism to move from one activity to the other. Something children with autism have difficulties with. When a new activity is up, the light in the drip turns on. When the drip is put in the tree, the light track shows the next activity...

ITD Project: Betweeny for autistic children

Within the master course Interactive Technology Design, Anne, Chantal, Moniek, Margot, Chandra, and Carola designed the Betweeny. Also Betweeny aims to support children with autism to move from one activity to the other, but in a different way. When a new activity is up, the children need to puzzle a block in the pictogram bar. When they found the match, the lights turn on and a movie starts, which explains the next activity...

PAP Project: Redesign LINKX for autistic children

Students of the master 'Integrated Product Design' redesigned LINKX within the course Prototyping Advanced Products. Thanks to their efforts, we now have a functioning prototype at the ID-StudioLab. We are looking for someone who likes to research the effect of LINKX on language-learning for children with autism.

Babble for autistic children

Beatrijs Voorneman did a little project on a learning device that can help children with autism learn words of everyday objects. She designed labels in which parents can store a word. By pushing the soft button, the child can playback this word. She tried her prototypes of babble with 3 children that were also participating in the elective RichCollections.

Contextmapping in Taiwan

KangNing Hsu from Taiwan, who does her master 'Design for Interaction' here, did her graduation project about how to apply contextmapping techniques in Taiwan. Her research builds on my earlier work on contextmapping in South Korea.

Contextmapping with children

I supervised together with Mathieu Gielen a group of three bachelor studens. These students explored how children in different age categories can be involved in contextmapping techniques.
