research

Having worked for about 14 years in the area of user interface research and design for industry and academia, I am now interested in how we can move beyond designing the interface, towards making systems more intelligent. Okay and now of course the question what do you mean by intelligence in products?
An intelligent product should be able to help the user by answering six types of questions (see: Rich, C.; Sidner, C.; and Lesh, N. 2001. Collagen: Applying Collaborative Discourse Theory to Human-Computer Interaction. AI Magazine 22(4): 15-25.)

What should/can/ will the product do _____?

What should I/we do next?

Where am/was I?

When did I/you/we do _____?

Why did you/we (not) do _____?

How do/did/I/we/you do _____?

Being able to ask and answer these types of questions implies a flexible and adaptable division of labor between the human and the product in the interaction process. Unlike most current products an intelligent product should be able to support the user when a mistake is made or if the user does not know how to use the system well. This implies the product has embedded task level knowledge and the ability to interpret what the user is doing most of the time.

We are currently working closely with Mistubishi Electronics Research in Boston and have implemented their agent technology (Collagen) in product prototypes for further research on interaction issues.

Furthermore, research on multimodal interfaces focuses on how a rich level of communication can be reached between user and product or system. Have a look at the pages for Marco Rozendaal and Miguel Bruns who are two PhD students working in this area.

In terms of application areas an important research focus for us in 2005 and beyond is well being. In particular, what is the role intelligence in products, coupled with rich interaction, can play in helping users gain an insight into their state of emotional and physical well being? How can this information be used to shape the user's environment? The Intelligence in products group in pursuing these research questions within the Bsik smart surroundings project. see: http://wwwes.cs.utwente.nl/smartsurroundings/ For more information on current projects please see our group web site.
