backgroundMy main job since obtaining my Master's degree Industrial Design is my position as assistant professor Design Aesthetics (formerly known as Form Theory) at Delft University of Technology since 1993. This position provides me with the opportunity to integrate my preference for idea generation, my soft spot for education, my curiosity in the field of design conceptualisation, human product interaction and social implications of design, and my urge to search for the unknown and partake in formulating a vision for the next generation of products. My research concentrates on designing and studying resonant interaction. Why do some products resonate with a person while others do not? What are the salient aspects of human product interaction in order to evoke resonance? This research focuses on aspects like sensorial tuning, personality, diversity, experience, well-being, multi-model and especially tangible interaction, expressivity, subtlety, engagement, feedforward, feedback and adaptive products. All these aspects are studied by building and testing experiential products and interactive multi-media installations, using a research-trough-design approach. Moreover, I concentrate on the role of different people ('users' and designers) in the early phases of the design process and the tools they have at their disposal to create interactive products. This research resulted in my Industrial Design Engineering PhD (cum laude) from the Delft University of Technology in September 2000. In addition to research, I am teaching topics like formgiving, interaction design, poetry of interaction, resonance and design tools and techniques. Besides my appointment at the university, I working at my own company called ID-Dock. ID-Dock is a design, research and advice centre for * product development (e.g. human-product interaction, websites) * corporate identity and image * user needs and experiences * tools (e.g. to enhance inspiration, evaluation and communication).
