Contextmapping is a procedure for conducting contextual research with users, where tacit knowledge is gained about the context of use of products. It aims to inform and inspire design teams, where users and stakeholders actively participate in the design process to ensure a good fit between the design and the use of a product.

Several papers of our group, addressing contextmapping and design research were presented at the IASDR conference (International Association of Societies for Design Research) , October, in Seoul, Korea.

Carolien Postma presented a paper "Trialogues: A framework for bridging the gap between people research and design" at DPPI 2009, the Designing Pleasurable Products and Interfaces conference, October, in Compiegne, France.

At iasdr, Seoul, we gave a one-day tutorial on Contextmapping and Storyboarding for designers (October 18)
In October, we gave an internal contextmapping workshop at Philips Consumer Lifestyle (October 29th).
On December 11th the Hogeschool Utrecht organised a mini conference 'Co-design Live'. There are presentations of cases with SME, and a set of workshops with design companies that focus more and more on services instead of products. HU
October 9, Pieter Jan Stappers gave a presentation about contextmapping at the 'Get a Grip' event organised by Scope.
August 29-30, Pieter Jan Stappers took part in the Copenhagen Co'creation event.

Rich Insights! - Elective course for (Dutch-speaking) students at TU Delft following up on C&C (Spring 2009)

May 20th we published the video registration of the symposium of May 13th;

ID-Studiolab

On May 13, 09:30-13:00, ID-Studiolab hosted a symposium to celebrate five years of contextmapping in industrial practice and education. Speakers wer Liz Sanders of MakeTools, Jacob Buur of the University of South Denmark, Froukje Sleeswijk Visser of ID-Studiolab, and 10 graduate students in a pecha kucha presentation. The speakers addressed their experiences with involving users in design practice, the challenges, and their view of the future developments.

On May 12, 12.30, Froukje Sleeswijk Visser successfully defended her Ph.D. Thesis Bringing the everyday life of people into design at the Aula of TU Delft. Copies have been for sale at the Symposium of May 13th. For more information, contact Froukje Sleeswijk Visser.

At Include 2009, Sanne Kistemaker presented a paper about her graduation project To each his own: Piece of Family connects elderly with family members, respecting their individual needs. Her project was awarded the prize for 'best inclusive design innovation'.
