id4215: Context and Conceptualisation

contextmapping: The course Context and Conceptualisation (or C&C for short) focuses on methods and techniques for understanding the context of user-product interaction, and using this understanding in designing products. It consists of three main ingredients: contextmapping, scenario thinking, and Vision in Product Design (or VIP for short).
In the first quarter, lectures provide a theoretical basis for contextmapping, treating its ingredients of techniques for data gathering, analysis and communication, grounding in participatory design. Practical exercises let the students get a taste for the ingredients, and provide a step-up for applying the skills in other projects.

The contents and background of the contextmapping elements in the course are described in Stappers, P.J., and Sleeswijk Visser, F. (2007) Bringing participatory techniques to industrial design engineers. In: Bohemia, E, Hilton, K, McMahon, C, & Clarke, A. (Eds). Shaping the Future? 9th international conference on Engineering & Product Design Education. Hadleys: Basildon, UK, p117-122
